The lowbrow style originated in Californian rock 'n' roll culture. It was all about those old cars with souped-up engines and rusty bodies – the keyword being "hot rods".
Today, lowbrow culture can be found in all media: films, paintings, sculptures…
Lowbrow is the "evil" aunt of classical (veristic) surrealism, as well as the naughty sister of fantastic realism. Aesthetics are not the primary focus; it's meant to be gritty, with garish pop characters inhabiting the most incongruous environments and usually doing truly wicked things.
It is intended as a provocation against the "intellectual" works that are so prevalent in established galleries. The danger of arrogantly dismissing "this rubbish," of refusing to engage with it, is ever-present. Phrases like "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" are to be burned. The fixed notion of a tidy, clearly structured world should be eradicated from our minds, especially for us art lovers.
Let yourselves
be whisked away into the grotesque world of lowbrow by our guest artist Blentyn Drwg.
She will be gracing us with her presence in February, among other things, with her photo series "Monster with Heart".
